Action on Access: Widening Participation and Disability Forum Meetings
Aimed at Widening Participation and Disability Practitioners in HEIs
Newcastle Forum open to FE Staff.
Due to the popularity and success of the 2006 Forums, Action on Access are pleased to announce four further Disability and WP forums. They will run in May 2007 in London, South East, Midlands and North East (including FE staff).
Do you know :
- disabled learners are still one of the most under represented groups of students in higher education?
- what your legal responsibilities are to disabled learners in the WP context?
- how you can make outreach activities more inclusive?
- how disabled students access support in higher education?
- how you can embed WP in your university's disability equality scheme?
An invitation
Action on Access is inviting you to take part in an innovative opportunity for HE staff. We are organising four extra free forums to enable WP and disability staff from HEIs and FE staff (in the North East) to spend time identifying how they can work together to benefit disabled students, enhance WP activity, help embed WP within institutional planning and contribute to creating more inclusive higher education provision.
Dates and venues
The four dates and venues for the events in May 2007 are:
- 1st May - 12:30 to 15:30 - Newcastle: TBC (Lunch Provided) (Including FE Staff)
- 3rd May - 16:00 to 18:00 - London: University of the Arts
- 15th May - 12:30 to 15:30 - Guildford: TBC (Lunch Provided)
- 23rd May - 12:30 to 15:30 - Birmingham: TBC (Lunch Provided)
The forum sessions will include presentations, examples of current practice, discussion and an opportunity to work through a self-review tool focussing on WP and disability issues.
Objectives
- Share expertise to provide a successful experience for under-represented students.
- Allow WP and disability practitioners to work together.
- Explore how to support disabled learners participating in WP activities.
- Devise methods to raise the profile of disabled students along with other under-represented groups.
We are also asking delegates to volunteer to deliver a 10 - 15 minute informal talk during the seminars, which focuses on where WP and disability staff are working well together. Examples that provide a way forward for others would be particularly welcome.
Booking form
Download Action on Access Booking form (MS Word .doc, 158 Kb).
Please draw this event to the attention of your counterpart in WP or Disability.
It would be beneficial if WP and Disability practitioners from the same HEI attend the forum. There is space to indicate this on the attached form. We are able to cater for up to 20 practitioners in each forum meeting.
Places will be reserved on a first-come-first served basis.
